Let’s talk about it: vaginal dryness is common and treatable

Vaginal dryness is one of those topics many women never bring up — but it’s very common, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Even better, it’s very treatable.
What causes it?
The most common cause is lower estrogen levels, which happen during perimenopause and after menopause. Dryness can also happen while breastfeeding, after childbirth, with some medications, and during cancer treatment.
Symptoms to watch for
- Dryness, itching or burning
- Pain or discomfort during sex
- Light bleeding after sex
- More frequent urinary symptoms or infections
When these changes are related to menopause, they’re sometimes called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Unlike hot flashes, these symptoms often don’t go away on their own.
Treatment options
- Vaginal moisturizers used a few times a week
- Lubricants during sex
- Low-dose vaginal estrogen, a prescription treatment that works locally and is a safe option for many women
- Other prescription options your provider may recommend
