Can you skip your period? Myths vs. facts

Whether it’s for a vacation, a big event, or because your periods are painful or heavy, many people wonder if it’s okay to skip a period. Here’s what you should know.
Myth: You need a monthly period on birth control
Fact: The bleeding you get during the placebo week of the pill is a withdrawal bleed, not a true period. For many people, there’s no medical need to have it every month.
Myth: Skipping periods is unsafe
Fact: Using hormonal birth control continuously to skip periods is considered safe for many people. It can even help with painful periods, heavy bleeding, migraines linked to your cycle, and PMS.
Myth: It works the same for everyone
Fact: Spotting or breakthrough bleeding is common at first, especially in the first few months. Some birth control methods also aren’t right for everyone — for example, estrogen-containing methods may not be safe if you have certain health conditions or get migraines with aura.
Ways to skip or reduce periods
- Taking combined birth control pills continuously
- Using the vaginal ring continuously
- Hormonal IUD, implant or shot, which often make periods lighter or stop them
